Staying Safe Around Downed Power Lines

As we continue to feel the effects of Tropical Storm Debby, it is very important to understand that downed power lines are extremely dangerous. Here are some key safety tips to keep in mind if you encounter one.

  1. Keep Your Distance: Always assume downed electrical wires are live. Stay at least 50 feet away from it and anything that it touches.
  2. Don’t Touch Anything: Do not touch the downed power line or anything in contact with it. Electricity can travel through these objects to electrocute you.
  3. Stay Inside Your Vehicle: If an electrical line falls on your car, stay inside and wait for help. Stepping out could allow electricity to travel through your body.
    • If you are in a dangerous situation and need to leave your vehicle, jump out and land with both feet, and then hop with both feet or shuffle your feet until you are in a safe location at least 50 feet away.
    • If you must move away from a downed power line, shuffle with small steps, hop on one foot, or hop with both feet tightly pressed together to minimize the risk of electric shock.
  1. Warn Others: Warn others to stay away and not to approach the area.
  2. Call for Help: Contact Santee Cooper at 888-769-7688 and emergency services immediately to report the downed power line.
  3. Stay Calm: Panic can lead to hasty decisions. Stay calm and think through your actions carefully.
