Stay Afloat: Boat Safely
Living in South Carolina provides access to lakes, waterways, rivers, and the ocean, which is a boater’s dream. Owning a boat certainly has its perks, but also comes with a lot of responsibility, the most important of which is knowing how to operate it safely.
The Santee Cooper Lakes are a great resource for locals and visitors alike, but they are also unique and should be enjoyed with safety in mind. Before you get underway, take a look at these tips:
Your boat:
- Inspect your boat for cracks or any structural issues.
- Inspect and test your batteries, lights and accessories to ensure they are in working order.
- Conduct maintenance on your motor. Check fuel and oil, and make sure it’s running smoothly.
- Inspect the boat trailer by checking lights, tire pressure, hitch and safety straps.
You and your crew:
- Make sure you have enough life jackets for everyone on board.
- Check your fire extinguisher.
- Make sure your first-aid kit is fully stocked.
- Do not operate a boat if you've been drinking.
The Lakes:
- Fishermen should shy away from anchoring in open channels.
- Swim only in designated areas.
- Observe all markers and buoys.
- Check for boating and weather advisories.
You should also freshen up on boating rules, and although the boating season can be a wonderful experience, it’s also the busiest. Drive defensively and be aware of new boat owners and rental boats with unseasoned captains, as well as distractions like tubers, jet skiers, and unforeseen obstacles.
Whether you’re new to boating or an old salt, it’s important to practice safe boating habits. For more information, check out a more comprehensive list of safety tips on our website.
