Sustainability isn’t just about environmental efforts; It’s about people, too, and students from Georgetown County schools had an enlightening experience at Winyah Generating Station.
Santee Cooper hosts a Sisters in STEM group at Winyah to show students how an education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can lead to interesting and fulfilling careers.
Engineer III Jessica Reed, Results Lab Supervisor Katie Cantrell, Stores Supervisor Michelle Swoyer, and Shift Supervisor Derek Taylor shared their experiences with the group this year, providing the students with a glimpse into the diverse roles and responsibilities within the electric utility field. Reed and Cantrell also took the girls on an engaging sightseeing tour of the facility, making the learning experience both enjoyable and informative.
One objective of the field trip was to inspire the young participants to consider a future career with Santee Cooper. Also, Santee Cooper team members encouraged the girls to pursue their dreams relentlessly and challenged them to make a meaningful impact.
Station Manager Darla Barnette offered the students valuable advice, "Expect excellence from yourself and everyone around you, and go be great." The empowering messages, inspiring role models, and captivating insights hopefully left an indelible impression on these bright minds and fueled their determination to pursue careers in STEM. And maybe we’ll see them again, working side-by-side with us at Santee Cooper.
